Grand Canyon Flash Floods: 15 Missing, Dozens Rescued!

A significant flash flood swept through popular areas of the Grand Canyon over the weekend, leaving 15 people unaccounted for and prompting extensive rescue operations. The deluge, which began around 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, inundated Bright Angel Canyon, the Phantom Ranch areas, and the North Kaibab Trail, all popular spots for hikers and visitors.

Initially, park officials reported over 20 individuals potentially missing, but that number was later revised to 15. These individuals were either on backcountry itineraries in the inner canyon or believed to be day-hiking in the affected regions. Despite the dramatic scale of the flooding, no injuries have been reported, a testament to the swift actions of emergency services.

By Sunday morning, a substantial 62 people had been successfully evacuated from Phantom Ranch and the lower North Kaibab Trail.

Further evacuations, targeting approximately 50 more individuals from the Phantom Ranch area and Cottonwood Campground, were actively being planned or were underway.

Search efforts intensified with two helicopters from the National Park Service and the Arizona Department of Public Safety scouring the North Kaibab Trail and the Colorado River. While these initial aerial searches did not locate any of the missing persons, operations are continuing. The flash flooding has also caused severe infrastructure damage within the park.

The critical Transcanyon Waterline, which supplies water throughout the canyon, was rendered non-operational. This has led to limited water reserves for the entire park, necessitating significant water conservation measures.

The damage also forced organizers to cease overnight hotel stays, further impacting park operations.

Authorities are urging visitors to exercise extreme caution and follow all safety advisories as recovery efforts continue.
