Central Teams Probe Nowgam Blast Site in Srinagar, Collect Samples
CFSL and NSG teams seal Nowgam area as investigators gather evidence after an accidental blast during explosive sampling left 11 dead in Srinagar.
Central Forensic Science Laboratories (CFSL) teams from Delhi and Chandigarh, along with the bomb disposal squad of the National Security Guards (NSG), visited the Nowgam police station blast site in Srinagar on Sunday. The blast, which occurred during the sampling of explosives, killed 11 people and injured dozens, officials said. Security forces sealed the police station and adjoining areas as investigators began collecting evidence to understand the reasons behind the incident. The teams inspected the site, collected samples, and interacted with local officials as they started their work to piece together what happened in the shed inside the station premises.
Officials described the materials involved: around 360 kg of explosives, reportedly brought from Faridabad after a haul of 3,000 kg of explosives, including ammonium nitrate, were recovered from a JeM-led “white collar terror module” and blasted accidentally during the sampling process. Dozens of cars, police vehicles, and surrounding residential houses were damaged in the blast, which was heard across a major part of Srinagar. The deceased included a special investigation team (SIA) member of the J&K Police, three members of the FSL team, two crime scene photographers, two revenue officials who were part of the magistrate’s team, and a tailor associated with the team. The Union territory administration has announced a magisterial probe into the incident. The lieutenant governor said the sampling process had been ongoing for the past two days and, while the area has been sealed, no final verdict on a terror angle has been reached yet. The aim now is to determine how the vast quantity of explosives and the seized materials were being used and why the sampling operation resulted in such a devastating explosion.
As investigators gather evidence, authorities emphasize transparency and a thorough inquiry to uncover all facts. The case continues to unfold as CFSL teams carry out detailed analyses and officials maintain that the probe will be magisterial in nature to ensure accountability and aid future safety measures.
