Glasgow, Scotland, Sarvesh Kushare has etched his name in Indian sports history, becoming the first Indian to win a silver medal in the men's high jump at the Commonwealth Games. Competing in Glasgow on Monday, the 31-year-old national record holder cleared an impressive 2.25m, securing a momentous achievement for the nation.
The thrilling final saw Kushare battle fiercely for the top spot. Jamaica's Romaine Beckford ultimately claimed the gold, while England's Jack Kimani secured the bronze with a jump of 2.20m. Both Kushare and Beckford made valiant attempts at 2.28m but failed to clear the height, leading to Beckford being awarded the gold on a countback. Another Indian participant, Adarsh Ram, finished fifth after successfully clearing 2.15m.
This silver medal marks a significant upgrade for India in the event. Previously, Tejaswin Shankar was the sole Indian medalist in men's high jump at the Commonwealth Games, having won a bronze at Birmingham 2022. Tejaswin also competed on Monday but retired early as a precautionary measure, focusing on the upcoming men's decathlon. His personal best stands at 2.29m, but his recent focus has been on multi-event competitions.
Kushare's journey to this podium finish is nothing short of inspiring. Hailing from Devargaon village in Maharashtra's Nashik district, the son of an onion farmer, he trained in his early years using makeshift landing pits crafted from corn husks, cotton, and agricultural waste by his father, who also served as his first coach. This remarkable achievement follows a string of recent successes, including becoming the first Indian high jumper to finish on the podium at a Diamond League meet in Monaco earlier this month, where he cleared 2.26m. Last month, he also set a new national record of 2.31m, winning gold at the National Inter-State Championships in Bhubaneswar. His dedication and perseverance have clearly paid off on the global stage.
