Chennai Sinkhole Swallows Car! ⚠️ Road Safety Concerns Mount in India
A car plunged into a 10-foot sinkhole near Chennai's Tidel Park, sparking urgent concerns over India's deteriorating road conditions. Learn about the rising dangers nationwide!
A horrifying incident unfolded in Chennai today as a car, carrying two individuals, plunged into a 10-foot sinkhole near Tidel Park. The road surface reportedly gave way without warning, leaving the driver little time to react. The vehicle lost balance, fell into the crater, and overturned.
Fortunately, the occupants managed to escape before the car fully submerged, though the incident has caused significant traffic congestion and alarm among motorists. This alarming event occurred on a stretch where metro rail construction is actively underway, raising questions about infrastructure safety and oversight. Metro workers have swiftly begun repair and restoration efforts, but traffic movement in the affected area remains impacted.
A similar cave-in occurred in May 2025 near Thiruvanmiyur Junction on OMR, where an aging sewage pipeline failed, causing another car to fall into a six-foot-deep crater, injuring five people.
The Chennai cave-in amplifies growing nationwide concerns over road conditions across India.
Potholes, open excavations, and various road defects have been linked to a disturbing number of fatal accidents.
Government data presented in Parliament paints a grim picture, revealing that 2,385 people died in pothole-related road accidents across India in 2024. This marks a staggering 53% increase from 1,555 deaths recorded in 2020. Between 2020 and 2024, a total of 9,438 lives were tragically lost due to such incidents.
Uttar Pradesh reported the highest number of pothole-related deaths in 2024, with 1,369 fatalities, while Tamil Nadu alone accounted for 612 such deaths between 2020 and 2024. The problem isn't confined to specific regions, with tragic incidents reported from major cities: In Delhi, a 37-year-old man died in March 2025 after his motorcycle slipped on a large pothole.
In Mumbai, a 59-year-old lost his life in July 2025 after his scooter hit a pothole and he was run over by a truck. Ahmedabad saw a couple electrocuted in September 2025 after their two-wheeler stumbled on a pothole on a waterlogged road, leading to the arrest of civic officials and contractors for negligence.
Even in Rajasthan's Baran district, four people were killed in July 2025 when their car, attempting to avoid a pothole on NH-27, collided with a truck. These incidents underscore that potholes are just one facet of India's broader road safety crisis.
The country recorded 1.77 lakh road deaths in 2024, a 2.31% rise from the previous year.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways attributes accidents to multiple factors including speeding, mobile phone use, drunken driving, wrong-side driving, and crucially, poor road conditions. For Chennai, the immediate focus remains on ensuring the safety of motorists navigating stretches affected by ongoing metro construction, and addressing the root causes of these dangerous road collapses.
