The sheer volume of rain has led to widespread disruption, affecting millions and highlighting concerns about urban planning and structural resilience.
One of the most alarming incidents unfolded on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, where a crucial 'missing link' segment, inaugurated just two months ago, was forced to shut down. A landslide near one of its tunnels made the route impassable, redirecting traffic onto the older, more congested Khandala Ghat route. Further exacerbating the infrastructure woes, a section of a flyover on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway in Palghar caved in. This collapse is particularly concerning as the section had reportedly undergone recent repairs, raising questions about the quality and durability of the work.
The severe weather has not only impacted major transport arteries but has also crippled daily life.
