An ostensibly routine film shoot in Mumbai spiraled into a real life crisis on Thursday when Rohit Arya took 17 children and two adults hostage inside R A Studio in Powai. Arya had told colleagues he planned to shoot a hostage drama involving children, and in the days leading to the stand-off the line between fiction and reality began to blur. He even asked for five litres of petrol and firecrackers, a request his crew did not fulfill.
As the stand-off continued, Arya blocked upstairs access, then poured a rubber solution and set it alight in front of the frightened children. He also wielded an air gun at times, prompting videographer Rohan Aher to flee and alert the police.
After about three hours, police stormed the studio and rescued the hostages. An officer shot Arya in the chest, and he died later at a hospital. The 17 children and two adults were rescued unharmed.
Investigators later examined Arya's claims of unpaid dues. The state education department said that the alleged dues were not backed by any relevant documents.
The incident has raised questions about on set safety and the potential risks when a shoot involves children. Authorities say a swift police response prevented greater harm, and safety reviews are expected for studio shoots in the city.
Residents and industry observers describe the event as a grim reminder of how quickly a staged scene can derail and end in tragedy, underscoring the need for clear protocols when fiction bleeds into reality.
