UK Nursing Scandal: Rogue Nurses Worked for Years Amid Regulator Failures

A major scandal is rocking the UK’s nursing world as new reports reveal that the national regulator has been failing to keep patients safe for years. The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), which is responsible for making sure nurses and midwives are fit to practice, is facing intense scrutiny after admitting that several rogue workers were allowed to stay on the job despite having criminal records or serious health issues.

In a shocking admission, the NMC confirmed that 15 professionals who should have been banned from the register continued to work in the NHS for as long as 12 years. These individuals were not safe to work with patients, yet they slipped through the cracks due to what the regulator itself called "completely and utterly unacceptable" failings. This discovery came to light only after a whistleblower raised concerns, forcing a massive review of over 18,000 applications dating back over a decade.

This isn’t the first time the NMC has been in hot water. The regulator has been dogged by allegations of a "toxic" and "bullying" culture for years. A recent audit by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA) found that the situation isn’t getting much better. In fact, the NMC met only nine out of eighteen performance standards this year—a drop from the previous year’s results. The audit also highlighted that more than 350 nurses were wrongly approved to work in the UK, some of whom were fraudulent or underqualified.

While the NMC has a new chief executive, Paul Rees, who has promised to turn things around, watchdogs say there is still no evidence of "substantial and sustained improvement." For many, the concern is simple: if the organization meant to protect the public is failing its own basic checks, how can patients feel safe? As the fallout continues, the pressure is on for the regulator to prove it can actually change its culture and do its job effectively.
