Delhi is officially baking! The national capital recorded its hottest day of the season this Tuesday, with temperatures hitting a scorching 45.1 degrees Celsius. This is nearly five degrees above what’s normal for this time of year, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warns that the heat isn't going anywhere soon. An orange alert has been issued as dry westerly winds, gusting up to 37 kmph, are expected to keep the city under a heatwave for the next seven days.
The extreme heat isn't just a number on a thermometer; it's putting a massive strain on the city’s resources. Delhi's power demand hit a seasonal peak of 7,776 MW on Tuesday as residents cranked up air conditioning to cope with the rising mercury. At the same time, the city’s air quality has deteriorated into the 'poor' category, adding another layer of difficulty for those who have to be outdoors.
To tackle the crisis, the government has launched a 'Heat Action Plan'. This initiative includes 'mobile heat relief units'—vans equipped with cold water, oral rehydration solutions (ORS), towels, and caps for those in need. Additionally, schools and community halls near major hospitals have been converted into temporary summer shelters to provide a safe, cool space for the public.
Health experts and the IMD are urging everyone to take immediate precautions. If you must head out, wear light-colored, loose cotton clothing and keep your head covered with a hat or umbrella. Most importantly, drink plenty of water frequently, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
