Chennai is gearing up for a notable shift in its weather patterns starting June 21, as the Southwest Monsoon intensifies its presence over Tamil Nadu. This strengthening monsoon promises widespread rainfall, offering much-needed relief from the oppressive heat that has gripped several parts of the state.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai, specific weather systems, including an upper-air circulation and a trough, are actively influencing conditions across southern India. These systems are creating favorable circumstances for enhanced rainfall activity in the region.
The weather office has issued forecasts for heavy rain in isolated areas, particularly concentrated along the Western Ghats region. More than ten districts are expected to experience significant downpours. These districts include Nilgiris, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Coimbatore, Theni, Dindigul, and Kanyakumari, alongside the ghat areas of Tirunelveli, which are all likely to receive heavy rainfall this Sunday.
For Chennai and its suburbs, light to moderate showers, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, are anticipated. This will provide a welcome respite from the currently warm and humid conditions. The RMC has indicated that the expected rainfall is likely to cause maximum temperatures to drop by 4-5 degrees Celsius across several districts, making the weather more pleasant.
This forecast holds particular significance given that India has experienced a somewhat patchy monsoon season so far. Many regions across the country have reported rainfall deficits during June, leading to concerns among agricultural communities and water management authorities. However, recent meteorological forecasts suggest that monsoon activity is now gaining momentum over the southern and western parts of the country. Fresh weather systems are expected to improve rainfall distribution in the coming days, alleviating some of these concerns.
Tamil Nadu has already witnessed some pockets of intense rainfall. Kalasapakkam in the Tiruvannamalai district recorded the highest rainfall in the state, measuring 9 cm during the 24-hour period ending 8:30 am on Saturday.
