In a significant announcement that has sent ripples through the cricketing world, Harmanpreet Kaur has stepped down as the captain of the Indian women's cricket team across all three formats. Her decision, shared via an emotional Instagram post on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, marks the end of a decorated leadership tenure that saw India achieve historic milestones, including its maiden Women's ODI World Cup victory last year.
The 37-year-old all-rounder, who had been leading the T20 side since 2016 and became the all-format leader in 2023, expressed that stepping down was "not an easy decision." She highlighted the immense personal sacrifice involved in captaincy, stating,
It carries years of memories, emotions, sacrifices, and moments that will stay with me for the rest of my life.
Kaur revealed that the demanding nature of leadership often came at the expense of her own game and ambitions, as she always prioritized the team's growth and success.
Just a day before her public announcement, Harmanpreet, along with vice-captain Smriti Mandhana and head coach Amol Muzumdar, met with BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia in Guwahati. This meeting, held to discuss the future roadmap for the women's team, appears to have preceded her decision. She emphasized that all her difficult choices as captain were made with the sole intention of making the team better and empowering other players.
Under Harmanpreet's leadership, India reached the T20 World Cup semifinals in 2018 and were runners-up in 2020. Her last assignment as captain was a golden one, leading India to retain the gold medal at the Asian Games in Nisshin last month.
With her stepping down, the path is now clear for Smriti Mandhana, who has been widely speculated as her successor, to take over the captaincy, potentially starting with India's home series against Zimbabwe next week.
Mandhana has also established her leadership credentials captaining Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Women's Premier League.
