Lammy: RAF could legally strike Iran missile bases
Britain weighs legal grounds as jets may be sent to the Middle East; Starmer backs cautious approach amid regional fighting.
British politicians are debating a potential expansion of RAF operations in the Middle East as tensions with Iran intensify. Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy argued that Britain could legally strike Iran's missile bases if it chose to, framing the issue as a matter of national defense and alliance obligations. He stopped short of endorsing immediate action, but his comments signal a readiness to consider a broader role if legal grounds are clear and political support exists.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer has indicated he stands by a cautious approach, even as he contemplates dispatching British fighter jets to the region to deter further escalation. He reiterated that the UK does not intend to join the US-Israel initial strikes on Iran that occurred over the weekend, though he did not rule out future operations should the situation deteriorate.
Defence Secretary John Healey has refused to categorically rule out expanding the RAF's role, underscoring how quickly plans could shift if intelligence and allied coordination point toward a different path. In recent days Britain has already increased its air presence in the Middle East as part of a broader show of support for regional partners.
The debate comes as fighting spreads across the region, raising questions about legal justifications, risk to civilians, and the potential for a broader escalation. Analysts say any UK action would need robust legal footing—likely framed around collective defense or UN authorization—and clear parliamentary oversight. Critics warn that even limited strikes could inflame tensions with Iran and provoke retaliatory moves that would affect shipping routes and regional security.
Beyond legalities, officials say any decision would hinge on allied alignment, risk assessment, and public support at home. The coming days are likely to shape Britain's posture in the Middle East for months to come, with lawmakers and security ministers under pressure to balance deterrence with restraint and international law.
