US Approves $6.67B Israel Arms Package, Including 30 Apache Helicopters

The United States has cleared a multi-billion-dollar arms package for Israel, part of ongoing security assistance as tensions in the region rise. The package includes 30 Apache attack helicopters with rocket launchers and advanced targeting gear, along with thousands of light tactical vehicles and power packs, bringing the total for Israel to about $6.67 billion. The announcements were made by the State Department late on Friday as Washington signals stronger military support for allied partners.

The largest component of the Israel package is the $3.8 billion for the Apache helicopters, a central element of the effort to upgrade air and ground capabilities and to extend lines of communication for Israeli forces. A significant portion, around $1.98 billion, covers the cost of 3,250 light tactical vehicles used to move personnel and logistics. Israel will also spend roughly $740 million on power packs to keep equipment operational across varied conditions.

In a broader regional frame, the announcements also highlighted a separate sale to Saudi Arabia valued at $9 billion, including Patriot missiles and related systems, described as strengthening a Major Non-NATO Ally’s defense and contributing to regional stability. The moves come as Washington pursues a Gaza ceasefire plan and aims to support reconstruction in the Palestinian territories while reinforcing the U.S. security role in the Gulf.

Critics argue that such large sales could inflame tensions or skirt tighter oversight, though officials say the packages deter threats and reinforce stability. The Israel package was disclosed after the State Department notified Congress of the approvals earlier on Friday, underscoring a long-running debate over arms transfers and congressional oversight.
