Carragher Blasts Carrick's Derby Blunder: Why Fernandes Suffered!

Football pundit Jamie Carragher hasn't held back in his assessment of Michael Carrick's tactical decisions during Manchester United's recent 1-0 defeat to rivals Manchester City in the highly anticipated derby. Carragher believes a key substitution made by Carrick inadvertently hampered United's star player, Bruno Fernandes. The match at Old Trafford was already a contentious affair.

Despite Erling Haaland's winning goal being deemed controversial due to an offside player, Manchester United found themselves with a significant advantage for much of the game. Manchester City's Phil Foden received a straight red card in the 23rd minute for a challenge on United captain Fernandes, leaving City to play with ten men.

However, even with the numerical advantage, United struggled to convert opportunities, hitting the post through Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo, and forcing a crucial save from Gianluigi Donnarumma in stoppage time. It was during this period that Carragher pinpointed Carrick's critical error.

Speaking on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football, Carragher argued that taking off midfielder Youri Tielemans in the 67th minute was the wrong move, especially if it meant delaying Benjamin Sesko's introduction. Carragher explained that while bringing on a striker and taking off a midfielder when a team is losing is a common managerial choice, the 'knock-on effect' for United was detrimental.

This specific change meant Bruno Fernandes was pushed deeper into central midfield.

Carragher stated.

It wasn't just about bringing Sesko on and who they brought him on for, it's what happened with Bruno Fernandes.

He further illustrated his point by showing a still image from late in the game, questioning why Fernandes wasn't allowed to play further up the pitch. "The best player in the Premier League, the best player by a mile in the Manchester United team is Bruno Fernandes.

Where is Bruno Fernandes here?" Carragher asked, highlighting Fernandes positioned on the halfway line, marking Erling Haaland in the 88th minute. Carragher concluded that while Carrick might not have intended for Fernandes to be so deep or marking Haaland, it was a direct consequence of the tactical decision to remove a central midfielder and drop Fernandes back.

This move ultimately limited United's creative output when they needed it most against a ten-man City side.
