Apple has officially jumped into the foldable phone market, unveiling its highly anticipated first device, the iPhone Duo, at the company's "Surprise and Shine" event in Cupertino. This landmark launch marks the first marquee product introduced under the leadership of Apple's new CEO, John Ternus, signaling a bold new direction for the tech giant.
Breaking away from the taller, vertical slab designs seen in many early foldables, the iPhone Duo boasts a wider form factor. This design choice is aimed at enhancing the user experience, particularly for video consumption, by providing a better aspect ratio when the device is fully unfolded. The impressive inner display measures 7.6 inches with a stunning Retina display, complemented by a 5.4-inch outer screen.
Apple highlighted that the device was "inspired by the versatility of iPad," suggesting a focus on productivity and multi-tasking.
Innovation extends to the display technology itself.
The inner screen features an "under-display" camera, offering users an unblemished, all-screen viewing experience. Furthermore, Apple claims to have addressed one of the most persistent issues with foldable phones: the crease.
The iPhone Duo utilizes a custom nanotexture finish designed to hide the fold and significantly reduce glare, positioning it against competitors who still struggle with visible creases. The device's robust hinge system, crafted from grade 5 aluminum and incorporating over 100 specialized components, promises smooth operation and enhanced durability.
Powering this new device is Apple's cutting-edge A20 Pro chip, paired with the C2 model for faster uploads, ensuring top-tier performance. In a move mirroring last year's iPhone Air, the iPhone Duo is an eSIM-only device.
