Mumbai, Maharashtra, A new directive by the Maharashtra state transport minister, Pratap Sarnaik, has put thousands of taxi and auto-rickshaw drivers across the state under pressure. Following an announcement on August 12, it is now mandatory for drivers of passenger transport vehicles to possess a working knowledge of Marathi, the official language of Maharashtra.
Drivers found to be failing this crucial language test have begun receiving show-cause notices. These notices come with a strict one-month deadline for drivers to demonstrate their proficiency in Marathi. Failure to comply or pass the test within this period could lead to significant action against their permits.
This policy impacts a substantial number of individuals, as approximately 9.65 lakh auto-rickshaw and taxi permits and badges have been issued throughout Maharashtra. The state government's move aims to ensure better communication between drivers and passengers, enhancing the overall service quality and local experience. While the initiative is seen by some as a step towards promoting the local language and improving passenger convenience, others may view it as an additional hurdle for drivers, particularly those from non-Marathi speaking backgrounds who contribute significantly to the transport sector.
