Tripura Student Angel Chakma Dies After Dehradun Hate Attack

The death of 24-year-old Angel Chakma, a MBA student from Tripura, has drawn attention to a racially charged assault in Dehradun. On December 9, police say, Chakma and his brother were in a Selakui locality market when a group of intoxicated youths hurled caste-based slurs and attacked them with rods and knives after an exchange over remarks. Chakma uttered, \"I am not Chinese... I am an Indian.\" He fought for 16 days in a hospital in Dehradun before succumbing to fatal spinal and head injuries on December 25.
Five people have been arrested, including two minors placed in a juvenile reform home. An absconding suspect remains at large, with a reward of ₹25,000 announced. A police team has been dispatched to Nepal to nab the fugitive, per the Uttarakhand Chief Minister's Office.
The Uttarakhand government also provided financial assistance to Chakma's family, sending ₹4.12 lakh as the first installment under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 and the Protection of Civil Rights Act, 1955.
In a preliminary investigation, officials say there is no evidence yet of racial remarks in Chakma's death, even as protests erupted in Tripura.
