Stephen Merchant’s wrestling film Fighting With My Family, the 2019 biopic about WWE star Paige (Saraya Jade Bevis), is headed to the stage as a musical. The story follows her from a chaotic British wrestling family in Norwich to the bright lights of the US, where she faced a defining moment in her career. Merchant has long imagined the project as a musical, describing the film’s tale as a young woman from a chorus line fighting to get her big break, surrounded by theatrical, larger-than-life characters and sweeping emotions. He also noted that each wrestling match could be treated like a different dance number, and that seeing the film reimagined for the stage feels like the natural next step, with the team capturing the humor, grit and heart faithfully yet with a fresh take. The musical’s soundtrack will be crafted by Miranda Cooper, known for her work with pop stars such as Kylie Minogue and Sugababes. Dwayne Johnson, who also starred in the film, echoed the enthusiasm, saying the story is packed with personal emotion expressed through the dynamic world of wrestling, which has always been about storytelling. Producers describe the adaptation as a natural progression to bring the film’s energy to a live audience. No production timeline has been announced yet.
