India on High Alert for Ebola: Health Ministry Reviews Preparedness as WHO Warns of Crisis

India is leaving nothing to chance as the World Health Organization (WHO) sounds the alarm over a new Ebola outbreak. While health officials have confirmed that there are currently no cases of the virus within the country, a high-level review meeting led by Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava has already put states and Union Territories on notice. The move comes as an "abundant precaution" to ensure that India remains one step ahead of a potential spread.

The global concern stems from a spike in cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and recent reports from Uganda, including a death in the capital city of Kampala. While the DRC has 51 confirmed cases, experts believe the actual scale of the epidemic could be much larger. Compounding the issue are significant cuts to international aid and disease surveillance networks in East Africa, which experts suggest may have hindered early containment efforts.

In response, the Indian government has shared detailed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) with all states. These protocols cover everything from pre-arrival and post-arrival screening at transit points to quarantine measures and laboratory testing. Health facilities are being prepped to manage any potential cases, and surveillance teams are on high alert to report any suspicious symptoms immediately.

India has a history of successfully managing similar health threats, including the 2014 Ebola crisis. Officials emphasized that the country’s previous experience has laid a strong foundation for current efforts. For now, the message to the public is one of vigilance rather than panic, as the health ministry continues to coordinate with various departments to maintain a shield against the virus.
