Police have revealed that a 44-year-old serving Indian Air Force (IAF) Wing Commander was arrested in May for allegedly sharing sensitive defence information and classified documents with a Pakistani intelligence operative. The officer, whose name has not been disclosed, was reportedly honey-trapped by a woman on social media.
The arrest, which occurred on May 30, was kept under wraps for nearly 50 days, with Delhi Police confirming the details only recently. A charge sheet in the case was submitted before the concerned court on July 30, and the officer is currently lodged in Tihar jail. The case falls under the Official Secrets Act (OSA).
According to an official statement, the arrest followed a complaint by Indian Air Force authorities. The officer was under active surveillance before being handed over to law enforcement agencies for investigation. Following a joint interrogation by the special cell and central intelligence agencies, he was produced before a city court that sent him to judicial custody.
Investigations suggest that the wing commander, who was reportedly facing personal life issues, was befriended by a woman on a social media platform earlier this year. This alleged honey-trap involved communications through texts, telephonic conversations, and even a request for the officer to install an app on a colleague's phone, presumably to gather more information. The full extent of the leaked information and the network involved is still under investigation, highlighting serious national security concerns.
