Mumbai is under a red alert as relentless monsoon rains cause widespread flooding, transport chaos, and tree falls. Authorities urge residents to stay safe and indoors as more heavy downpours are expected.
Mumbai continues to face a severe challenge as the monsoon season unleashes one of its most intense spells, leading to a red alert remaining in effect. The city has been grappling with widespread waterlogging, significant transport disruptions, and numerous incidents of tree falls, particularly in low-lying areas, following over 300 mm of rainfall in just 24 hours in some localities.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has maintained its 'red alert' for Mumbai, warning of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places. Moderate to intense rain spells are anticipated to continue across Mumbai and the neighbouring Raigad district, with widespread rainfall expected throughout the day. Gusty winds of 55-65 kmph are also forecasted, raising concerns about potential damage to structures and further disruptions.
Local authorities, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), have issued urgent advisories, urging residents to stay indoors unless travel is absolutely necessary. People are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and steer clear of vulnerable areas. The saturated ground conditions and high tides expected during the day indicate that fresh flooding and further disruptions cannot be ruled out.
Several parts of the city recorded exceptionally heavy rainfall. The Building Proposal Office in Vikhroli West registered 310.6 mm, followed by Colaba Pumping Station with 306.6 mm, and Tagore Nagar Municipal School in Vikhroli with 301.8 mm. Other areas like Colaba, Malabar Hill, and Mandavi also experienced more than 200 mm of rain, highlighting the intense nature of the current monsoon activity. The continuous downpour has even impacted ongoing infrastructure projects, such as the formal launch of bullet train tunnel-boring work, which was disrupted by the heavy rains.
