Andhra temple stampede: Dozens feared dead as Ekadashi crowds surge at Srikakulam temple

A deadly stampede erupted at the Venkateswara Swami Temple in Srikakulam district during Ekadashi prayers, drawing thousands of devotees to a site with narrow entry and exit points. Crowds surged at the temple complex, and many people were pushed toward confined corridors, trapping others and triggering a chaotic scramble. Officials said the privately managed temple operates without the official approvals that larger government-run temples are required to obtain, a factor now being cited in early investigations.

So far, at least five people have been confirmed dead, with several more injured as rescue teams and local police rushed to the scene. The toll, and the number of injured, was expected to rise as more victims were recovered from crowded zones.

Chief Minister Naidu expressed condolences and directed officials to ensure better treatment for the injured and coordinate relief measures. He also ordered a thorough review of safety arrangements at the site and surrounding areas.

Authorities are launching a review into why the temple lacked registrations and what safety measures failed, while rescue operations continued through the night. The incident has prompted calls for stricter crowd-management protocols at religious sites during peak festivals, including improved entry/exit control, better emergency access, and real-time monitoring.

Experts emphasize that such tragedies highlight the critical need for proactive planning at large gatherings. Ensuring proper licensing, safety drills, clear signage, and trained crowd-control personnel can help prevent repeat events and protect worshippers.
