Sonam Wangchuk Recognized as the Unifying Leader of Ladakh

Sonam Wangchuk, an environmentalist, has survived the political upheaval, and his arrest has turned the tide in Ladakh in his favor. The environmentalist and educational pioneer Wangchuk, 59, has become a consensus leader in both Muslim-majority Kargil and Buddhist-majority Leh as a result of his imprisonment under the strict National Security Act.

To negotiate with the Center on the statehood demand and constitutional protections under the Sixth Schedule, the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), which supports the Apex Body Leh (ABL), has demanded the release of Wangchuk. Since his arrest, Wangchuk has gained momentum and is now regarded as a grassroots figurehead leading the cause of both Ladakh regions. His demand for a judicial probe into the September 24 firing that left four residents dead has resonated on the ground.

When Wangchuk met his supporter, Mustafa Haji, at Jodhpur jail a few days ago, it was well-known social activist and leader Sajid Kargili who made the statement public. The climate expert has been portrayed as a courageous leader by Wangchuk's statement that he is willing to stay in jail until all of the demands of the people of Ladakh are fulfilled.

“Till now, Wangchuk was known as a climate activist, innovator but with the passage of every passing day in jail his profile is growing as a strong leader,” said Sahil Abas, a post graduate student from Kargil studying in Kashmir University.

Wangchuk is not new to politics. His father was a political leader who served as a minister in the old J&K state over three decades ago.

”Sonum Wangchuk is face of Ladakh. He should be released without any condition and all demands like judicial probe, compensation to families and release of arrested persons should be done and then dialogue should be initiated with people of Ladakh,” said Sajad Kargili.

Wangchuk, a Ramon Magsaysay award winner recognized for his efforts in education and environmental sustainability, was arrested after protests in Leh became violent on September 24. Four people died during police firing. Authorities claimed that Wangchuk was a major influence in sparking the demonstrations.

On September 30, the Ladakh administration released a statement explaining Wangchuk’s detention. They accused him of frequently mentioning “self-immolation” in his public speeches. They noted that this drew comparisons to protest methods used in Tibet. Officials stated that this speech created a real threat to public order.
