Legendary industrial metal pioneers Godflesh are gearing up to unleash their penultimate album, "Decay," next month, with a release date set for September 25th via Relapse Records. This announcement comes with the bittersweet news that the iconic duo, formed in 1988 by Justin K. Broadrick and B.C. Green, will soon be calling it quits for health reasons, making “Decay” one of their final offerings.
Godflesh has left an indelible mark on music since their formation in Birmingham, merging slow, heavy soundscapes with psychedelic textures and electronic techniques like drum machines and sampling. Their 1989 debut, "Streetcleaner," was a monumental release, profoundly influencing extreme metal, industrial, and noise-rock genres. Over the decades, Broadrick and Green have maintained an intermittently active presence, cultivating a vast and inspiring discography.
The decision to cease operations stems from Justin K. Broadrick's personal health. The 57-year-old musician recently underwent surgery for an inguinal hernia. The intense vocal style required for Godflesh's music could pose a risk for further hernias, making it unsustainable for him to continue. While Godflesh's days are numbered, Broadrick will thankfully continue to make music through his other projects, Jesu and JK Flesh, which do not demand the same physical strain.
"Decay" emerges from the same creative sessions that produced their 2023 album, "Purge." Broadrick mentioned that the material was a "huge pool of songs," from which he selected tracks appropriate for "Purge," with the remaining pieces forming "Decay." This new record was largely completed before his surgery, adding a poignant significance to its title as the band approaches its conclusion. Fans can get a taste of the upcoming album with the newly released track, "Living/Ending."
