US President Donald Trump made headlines on Sunday as he waved the green flag to kick off the historic Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington D.C. The high-octane event served as the grand finale to a summer-long series of celebrations marking the nation's 250th birthday, drawing hundreds of spectators to the capital's streets.
Before the roar of engines truly began, President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump added a unique touch to the festivities. They completed a ceremonial lap of the 1.7-mile track in the presidential limousine, affectionately known as "The Beast." As they crossed the finish line, the new Air Force One soared overhead in a spectacular flyover, adding to the patriotic atmosphere.
This marked a significant moment for the capital, as it was the first time professional road racing had ever been hosted in Washington D.C. Despite the city's usual 55 mph speed limit, 25 of the world's fastest drivers pushed their open-wheel, single-seater cars to exhilarating speeds of up to 190 mph (306 km/h).
They navigated 147 laps, covering a total of 250 miles, a fitting tribute to the nation's milestone anniversary.
The challenging course wound its way past some of America's most iconic landmarks, including the Washington Monument and the various museums lining the National Mall. Drivers ultimately sped past a finish line perfectly framed by the majestic US Capitol building.
The race saw driver Kyle Kirkwood clinch his seventh career IndyCar win, adding another impressive victory to his record.
