The crisis began at an aerospace components plant in Garden Grove, located about 35 miles south of Los Angeles. A tank containing approximately 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate—a highly flammable and volatile chemical used in plastic production—began to overheat and vent vapors on Thursday afternoon. Since then, the situation has grown increasingly dangerous as the tank started to bulge, a clear sign of critical pressure buildup.
Fire officials have been working tirelessly to manage the risk. While they managed to neutralize one tank, the second remains a major threat. Officials have stated they are preparing for two possible outcomes: the tank failing or a full-scale explosion. The primary concern is a critical rupture, which could release toxic fumes or cause a devastating blast in the industrial zone.
Health experts have warned that exposure to high levels of methyl methacrylate can cause severe respiratory distress and lead to hospitalization. Because of this, schools in the area have been shut down and residents are being urged to take the evacuation orders seriously. The affected areas include parts of Cypress, Stanton, Buena Park, and Westminster, in addition to the primary zone in Garden Grove.
While the leak appeared to have stopped by Friday afternoon, a faulty valve has prevented crews from fully securing the tank, meaning the emergency is far from over. The facility is operated by GKN Aerospace, a major supplier for commercial and military aircraft. Fortunately, no injuries or deaths have been reported so far, but the area remains under high alert as experts monitor the temperature of the damaged container.
