Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president C. Joseph Vijay has once again asserted his party's unwavering commitment to abolishing the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET). In a strong statement issued on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, Mr. Vijay emphasized that his party's stand on this contentious issue remains firm and uncompromising.
The Chief Minister also sharply criticized the Union government for the recent detention of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, and other prominent leaders. These detentions occurred during an anti-government protest held on Tuesday, July 21, in front of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's residence in New Delhi. The protest aimed to highlight growing concerns over a spate of paper leaks and to advocate for crucial education reforms across the nation. Mr. Vijay labeled these detentions as "anti-democratic," expressing his party's full support for the ongoing protests by opposition parties on the Parliament premises.
Mr. Vijay highlighted the severe impact of the NEET examination on students and their families, asserting that his party would not make empty promises for electoral gains on such a critical matter. He outlined a long-term solution to the NEET issue, suggesting that education should be moved back to the State List from the Concurrent List of the Constitution.
Acknowledging potential constitutional or legal hurdles in this process, Mr. Vijay proposed an interim measure: the creation of a "Special Concurrent List." This special list, he argued, would empower State governments with the necessary authority to exercise full control over education, including medical education. He concluded by urging the Union government to heed the sentiments of the people and the aspirations of students by moving to abolish NEET. In a related event, Tamil rapper Arivu was also detained near the Secretariat in Chennai during a bid to protest against NEET, with CM Vijay reportedly meeting him later.
