Modi in Bhutan: Strengthening India-Bhutan Ties on 2-Day Visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Thimphu for a two-day state visit aimed at deepening India-Bhutan relations. Upon landing, Modi thanked Bhutan's Prime Minister for the warm welcome, saying the visit reflects the deep bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two nations. He reaffirmed that India and Bhutan share a time-tested partnership built on trust, goodwill, and mutual respect. During the visit, Modi will participate in the Global Peace Prayer Festival organized by the Royal Government of Bhutan and hold talks to advance bilateral ties in connectivity, energy, and development cooperation.

In a deeply moving moment, Bhutan's King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck expressed admiration for India, calling the partnership intergenerational and thanking Modi for constant support, saying 'We love India, we love you.' The King’s words underscored a growing, heartfelt bond between the Himalayan neighbours.

Modi also announced several initiatives to strengthen ties: land in Varanasi will be provided for a Bhutanese temple and guest house, continuing a string of cultural projects following a Royal Bhutanese Temple in Rajgir. He said the plan reflects shared heritage and Buddhist links and will deepen people-to-people ties.

Other major announcements included creating an immigration checkpoint at Galebhu to facilitate travel and trade, a boost of 10,000 crore in support for Bhutan’s 13th Five-Year Plan, expansion of UPI payment services for Bhutanese visitors, and a joint satellite project to advance education, innovation, and technology. The visit highlights the enduring friendship and broader economic and cultural links between the two nations.
