Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, has made a dramatic vow to return to her homeland this year, despite facing a death sentence in absentia. Hasina, 78, has been living in exile in neighbouring India since August 2024, following a student-led uprising that brought an end to her 15-year, "iron-fisted" rule.
The defiant declaration came during an interview with Indian broadcaster NDTV, where Hasina asserted she is not afraid of death and dismissed the verdict against her as "part of an illegal, unconstitutional and politically motivated process." She highlighted her long political career, stating, "Many conspiracies have been hatched against me. But breaking through every web of conspiracy... I was elected prime minister five times by the people’s vote and worked for the country’s unprecedented development." Her resolve is clear: "overcoming every obstacle and every conspiracy, I will return to my country this year."
Last November, a Dhaka court found Hasina guilty of incitement, ordering killings, and failing to prevent atrocities, sentencing her to be hanged. Her former ruling party, the Awami League, which was once hugely popular, has since been outlawed.
Hasina's return would undoubtedly spark further political upheaval in Bangladesh. While ties between India and Bangladesh have seen improvements since Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s landslide victory in February, the issue of Hasina’s extradition remains a point of friction, with Bangladesh repeatedly demanding her return.
