The Congress party is currently in a heated internal debate, publicly criticizing its prominent leader, Shashi Tharoor, over remarks that have been construed as "admiration" for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The controversy erupted following Tharoor's comments suggesting that PM Modi had clearly conveyed to U.S. President Donald Trump the principle that civilian sailors on commercial ships should not be targeted in wartime.
Pawan Khera, head of Congress’ media and publicity department, led the charge, stating that Tharoor's admiration for the Prime Minister seems to have "transcended the physical world," implying he is now capable of hearing things Modi never even said. Khera further questioned why other significant issues, such as the killing of three Indian sailors by the United States in the Gulf of Oman, challenges to Trump's claims on halting Operation Sindoor, and the attack on Iranian frigate IRIS Dena, were not mentioned in the India-U.S. joint statement if civilian safety was such a pressing concern.
Responding to the backlash, Tharoor, the Thiruvananthapuram MP, expressed his astonishment on X (formerly Twitter). He stated, "Frankly, I find it extraordinary that a statement about protecting Indian civilian sailors is being twisted into a partisan political controversy." He emphasized that his remarks were solely focused on the safety of Indian citizens and the fundamental principle that civilian seafarers should never be targets of military action, regardless of the political climate. He added that if some individuals are more interested in scoring political points than addressing genuine safety concerns, it reflects more on them than on him.
The former Union Minister underscored that concern for Indian lives should be a unifying factor, not a divisive one. This incident highlights the ongoing internal frictions within the Congress party and the careful tightrope walk many leaders navigate when commenting on national issues that might inadvertently be perceived as supporting a political rival.
