Why My Boring Queer Life Is My Greatest Achievement
Why My Boring Queer Life Is My Greatest Achievement
Queer joy isn't always a parade. Let's explore the beauty of laundry, grocery runs, and ..... being mundane.
If you follow enough queer creators online, you might think our lives are a constant stream of neon lights, glittering outfits, and high-energy activism. While I love the vibrance of our community, I have realized that the parts of my life I cherish most are actually quite dull.
I spend a lot of time thinking about love. Lately, I have been leaning into what I call queer mundanity.
This is the quiet, unscripted stuff that happens between the big milestones. Maybe it's just being a person in the world with someone you love, or maybe just those quiet hours in your bedroom, staring at the ceiling by yourself.
Beyond the Tragedy and the Party
For a long time, queer media had two modes: extreme trauma or extreme celebration. We were either dying in a tragic third act or dancing on a float at Pride. While both of those narratives represent real experiences, they miss the vast middle ground where most of us actually live.
There is a unique kind of peace in the ordinary. I am talking about the moments where you aren't thinking about your identity or your place in the political landscape. You are just thinking about what to have for dinner. There is something healing about the fact that my biggest problem today was that we ran out of oat milk.
The Beauty of the Grocery Store
Have you ever stopped to look at your partner while you are standing in line at a pharmacy? There is no soundtrack playing. There is no dramatic lighting. You are both just tired and maybe a bit annoyed by the person in front of you.
That moment is intimacy in its purest form. It is the comfort of being seen in your most average state. We often feel pressured to be exceptional to prove we deserve to be here, but I think the real win is being allowed to be mediocre. We should celebrate the domesticity of queer life: the shared chores, the silent mornings, and the messy hair.
Normalcy is a Revolution
Choosing to live a quiet life is a luxury that many who came before us never had. When we allow ourselves to be boring, we are claiming a level of safety and stability that was once unthinkable. Our love does not always have to be a loud statement. Sometimes, it can just be a soft place to land.
So, let us tell more stories about the laundry. Let us write poems about the grocery list. Our everyday lives are not just filler between the big events. They are the substance of our joy. And honestly, there is nothing more beautiful than that.
