Congress leader Sonia Gandhi says a systematic BJP campaign seeks to vilify Jawaharlal Nehru and erase the modern foundations he helped lay for India.
At a public event launching the Nehru Centre India at Jawahar Bhawan, Delhi, Congress leader Sonia Gandhi accused the ruling establishment of pursuing a deliberate project to vilify Jawaharlal Nehru. She argued that the drive goes beyond merely questioning a historical figure; it aims to erase the first prime minister from public memory and to strip away the social, political and economic foundations that Nehru helped shape. Gandhi described Nehru as the principal architect of the modern Indian nation-state, whose faith in planned economic growth, scientific temper and secularism guided the country through decades of change and upheaval. To her, secularism meant celebrating India's diversity while upholding unity, and she warned against any campaign that distorts these ideas.
Gandhi said the critique of historical figures is legitimate, but warned against 'deliberate mischief' that twists Nehru's words and actions. She asserted that the forces behind the vilification belong to an ideology that had no role in the freedom movement or in drafting the Constitution. According to her, this ideology fanned hate and contributed to the atmosphere that led to Mahatma Gandhi's assassination, and its adherents still glorify Gandhi's killers. She cautioned that the current effort is not just about Nehru but about diminishing a multi-faceted legacy that shaped India's social, political and economic order. She stressed that while historical analysis is welcome, a systematic denigration and rewriting of history must be resisted.
While critics will analyze Nehru's contributions in various contexts, we should guard against campaigns that aim to redefine the founding ideals of the republic. Gandhi's remarks reflect a broader debate in Indian political life about memory, accountability and how history is used to justify present-day policy choices.
