Nepal Votes 2026: Gen Z Drives Change Against Old Guard

Nepal is heading to a general election two years ahead of schedule after a Gen Z-led protest movement reshaped the political landscape. About 275 seats in the House of Representatives are up for grabs as around 65 parties contest the vote, signaling a crowded field as the country confronts calls for reform and a move away from patronage-driven governance.

The major players include the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist), led by former prime minister K.P. Sharma Oli, who hopes a comeback despite youth pushback. The Nepali Communist Party, under Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda', argues it has addressed protesters' concerns but has not yet handed power to younger leaders. The Rastriya Swatantra Party, a centrist reformist outfit led by Ravi Lamichhane and senior figure Balendra Shah, is riding a wave of anti-corruption and generational change. The Nepali Congress, now led by a younger face, Gagan Thapa, is trying to shed its “old guard” image. The Rastriya Prajatantra Party advocates for monarchy restoration, signaling a traditional path in Nepal’s evolving political landscape.

Voting runs from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with counting starting immediately after ballot boxes are collected. These polls come after last September’s youth-led movement against corruption and misgovernance, a turning point in the country’s political discourse. Analysts say the election tests how much energy Gen Z has injected into politics and whether these demands translate into durable policy.
