Hindu Petrol Pump Worker Crushed After Blocking Theft in Bangladesh
A Hindu fuel station worker in Rajbari, Bangladesh, was killed when a driver tried to flee after the worker blocked an SUV from leaving without paying about Tk 5,000.
A Hindu man named Ripon Saha, 30, was working at Karim Filling Station in Goalanda Mor when an SUV arrived around 4:30 am on Friday. Police say the driver refused to pay for fuel worth about Tk 5,000, and Saha stepped in to block the vehicle from leaving. He was struck and killed instantly as the car sped away.
Police later arrested the car owner, Abul Hashem alias Sujan, 55, a former treasurer of the Rajbari district BNP and former president of the district Jubo Dal, along with his driver Kamal Hossain, 43. Investigators seized the vehicle during the arrests.
The incident occurs amid ongoing concerns about violence against Hindus in Bangladesh as parliamentary elections approach on February 12. The Hindu population in the country is around 7.95% of the total population, according to the 2022 census. Authorities say a murder case will be filed and the suspects are in custody as the investigation continues.
