India has started its medal haul at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, U.S., with Ashish Yadav clinching a silver medal in the men's javelin throw event. The 19-year-old athlete's impressive third-round throw of 74.09 meters secured the second spot, marking a significant achievement for the nation.
Yadav's performance places him in elite company, as he becomes only the second Indian to win a silver in this event at the U20 Championships, following in the footsteps of two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra. Chopra famously won gold and set a world junior record of 86.48 meters back in 2016, a record that still stands today. While Yadav's throw was 40cm short of his personal best of 74.49 meters, achieved earlier this year in Patiala, it was enough to earn him a well-deserved medal.
The gold medal in the event went to South Africa's Jan-Hendrik Heymans, who delivered a season's U20 world-leading throw of 80.50 meters on his sixth and final attempt. Dominica's Addison James secured the bronze medal with a throw of 73.89 meters.
Hailing from a farming family in Mirzapur district, Uttar Pradesh, Ashish Yadav trains at the IIS-SAI center in Hisar, Haryana, under head coach Arvind Kumar. He has openly expressed his inspiration from Neeraj Chopra's remarkable career. Chopra himself was quick to congratulate the young talent on social media, stating, "Always a great feeling to see Indian athletes competing and winning at the International level, this one is a little more special for me as a javelin thrower. Super proud of you Ashish on your Silver at the U-20 Worlds, this is just the start!"
Yadav has shown strong form throughout the 2024 season, consistently improving his personal best. He also secured a silver at the Junior Federation Cup with a throw of 73.12 meters. Despite a slight dip in performance at the Asian U20 Championships in May, where he finished fifth, he quickly bounced back to claim third place at the Indian Athletics Series-9 in Ludhiana. His dedication and hard work culminated in this historic silver medal, hinting at a bright future for Indian athletics.
