SpaceX expands safety with Stargaze, offering free SSA data to the global satellite community. It shares precise ephemerides and near-real-time conjunction screening to reduce orbital debris risk.
Stargaze, a new Space Situational Awareness (SSA) system from SpaceX, allows satellite operators to precisely and freely track objects in Earth's orbit. To improve satellite safety, the Elon Musk-owned rocket company is making its conjunction screening service available to the international space community.
SpaceX hopes to encourage satellite operators to use safer and more transparent orbital practices by offering free ephemeris sharing and conjunction screening.
In a post on X, Musk wrote,
"SpaceX is now providing precise positional awareness of objects in Earth orbit to all satellite operators for free. This will greatly reduce the probability of collisions that create orbital debris (space junk) hazards.”
SpaceX's recently unveiled Stargaze system greatly expands the detection capability for objects in low Earth orbit by using nearly 30,000 star trackers on its satellites to detect about 30 million transits per day. In order to produce nearly real-time orbit estimates and position and velocity predictions for detected objects, the Stargaze system automatically aggregates observations.
These predictions are part of a space traffic management platform. It identifies possible close approaches between objects and creates Conjunction Data Messages. SpaceX developed this system to provide conjunction screening results in minutes, rather than the industry standard of several hours.
SpaceX announced that it will offer its Stargaze conjunction data to all satellite operators for free through its space traffic management platform.
In addition to the ephemeris from other participating operators, those who submit ephemeris (trajectory forecasts) to the platform will begin receiving CDMs based on Stargaze data starting this spring. This ensures that operators have quick access to the best available data for conjunction assessment.
