Tamil Nadu's political leadership stepped up a coordinated push this week to curb Karnataka's Mekedatu dam project, arguing that the Centre has not granted clearance for the balancing reservoir and that the Supreme Court should safeguard Tamil Nadu's rights over the Cauvery. G.K. Vasan, president of the Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar), urged the state government to actively intervene in the Supreme Court, warning that approval to prepare a Detailed Project Report for Mekedatu could set a dangerous legal precedent for the river. He emphasized that the Cauvery's flow is crucial for both agriculture in the delta districts and drinking water for several towns, and urged submissions to be filed to defend Tamil Nadu’s interests.
