Wicked: For Good roared to a $226 million global debut this weekend, marking the fourth-biggest opening for 2025. In North America alone, the film pulled in about $150 million from 4,115 theaters, a record-setting start for a Broadway adaptation. The global total places it behind Disney's Lilo & Stitch remake ($341 million), Jurassic World Rebirth ($322 million) and A Minecraft Movie ($313 million), but ahead of several other wide releases this year.
The weekend numbers signal that audiences are still flocking to big musical fantasies on the big screen, offering a hopeful boost to a previously languishing box office. Costume designer Paul Tazewell says Glinda’s wedding scene needed to visually anchor her in Emerald City's culture, with a dress meant to impress and a 25-meter veil that underscored the character's public status. The final film, focusing on Act Two of the beloved musical, features Ariana Grande as Glinda and continues to draw fans of the original Broadway show. For studios and theater producers, the numbers are a hopeful sign that musical fare can still draw audiences worldwide when paired with star power and high-concept fantasy visuals.
