West Bengal Post-SIR: Millions Lose Their Names on Voter Rolls

West Bengal has begun publishing post-SIR electoral rolls in phases, as the Special Intensive Revision exercise continues ahead of Assembly elections. The update is aimed at creating cleaner, more accurate rolls while removing ineligible entries. Bankura district alone shows about 1.18 lakh names removed since the SIR began, highlighting the scale of the revision on the ground.

Across the state, the deletions have touched millions. One tally notes about 63.66 lakh names deleted so far, with other figures placing the count around 6.2 to 6.37 million as inclusions and objections continue to be processed. The numbers illustrate a sweeping overhaul of the voter list, a process that has drawn interest and concern from voters and political observers alike.

Voters can verify their presence in the final roll online through the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal site (ceowestbengal.wb.gov.in) and the ECI portal (eci.gov.in) by entering their name and EPIC number. Entries marked as 'Under Adjudication' indicate pending verification, while those marked 'Deleted' have been removed from the rolls. Hard copies of the final roll will be provided to political parties, and the final version will also be accessible on the ECI website.

As the assembly elections approach, residents are urged to check their status, ensure accuracy, and report any discrepancies promptly. The outcome of this revision will shape the electoral landscape in the months ahead, influencing who can cast a ballot and where.
