Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to engage in high-level diplomacy at the G7 Summit in France, marking his first direct meeting with US President Donald Trump since February 2025. This much-anticipated encounter, scheduled for June 17 at 6:15 PM (IST) on the sidelines of the summit, is expected to heavily focus on ongoing negotiations for a significant trade deal between India and the United States. A senior White House official confirmed the meeting and its key agenda, underscoring the importance of bilateral economic ties.
PM Modi is participating in the G7 Summit from June 16-17, hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron. During the summit, he will join leaders from G7 countries, partner nations, and international organizations to discuss a range of critical global issues. These topics include fostering global partnerships, promoting sustainable economic development, and ensuring the safe and ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI).
The proposed trade deal between India and the US has been a subject of intensive negotiations for several months, with sources indicating it will be a prominent discussion point during the Modi-Trump meeting. Earlier this year, both countries signed a Joint Framework Agreement, laying the groundwork for the comprehensive deal. A White House official highlighted the natural economic synergy between India and the United States, emphasizing the vast potential to expand bilateral trade across sectors like energy, industrial products, and specific agricultural commodities. The official also acknowledged Prime Minister Modi's ambitious vision for India's global role and for the strengthening of India-US relations.
Following his participation in the G7 Summit, Prime Minister Modi's European tour will continue to Paris on June 18. In Paris, he is slated to hold further bilateral meetings and attend VivaTech, which is recognized as Europe's largest technology and startup event. His visit will also include an address to the Indian community residing in France, further cementing India's diplomatic and economic outreach on the global stage.
