Oracle Slashes 21,000 Jobs Amid AI Adoption & Business Restructuring
Tech giant Oracle reduces its workforce by 13%, cutting 21,000 jobs as it embraces AI and restructures operations. Explore the growing trend of job displacement in the tech sector.
Oracle, the cloud computing behemoth, has significantly downsized its global workforce, shedding approximately 21,000 employees in fiscal year 2026. This substantial cut represents a 13% reduction from its previous total, bringing the company's headcount down to 141,000 as of May 31, 2026, compared to 162,000 just a year prior. The restructuring is partly attributed to the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) across its operations, alongside other strategic business adjustments.
The company's annual report, released on Monday, revealed a massive increase in severance payments. Oracle spent a staggering $1.84 billion on severance and other exit costs related to these restructuring activities in fiscal 2026. This figure is a sharp contrast to the $374 million spent in the preceding fiscal year, highlighting the scale of the recent workforce adjustments.
Oracle's filings further explained that these changes were a response to a combination of factors, including management and product shifts, performance issues, broader strategic changes, and acquisitions. The reduction follows multiple reports earlier this year that hinted at thousands of job cuts within the tech giant.
This trend at Oracle is not an isolated incident but rather a reflection of a wider phenomenon gripping the technology sector. The industry is witnessing growing anxieties over job displacement due to AI disruption. Data from Layoffs.fyi, a website dedicated to tracking sector-wide job cuts, indicates that 196 tech companies have laid off more than 119,800 employees so far this year. High-profile companies like Meta have also undertaken significant workforce reductions, slashing 8,000 jobs, or 10% of its workforce, while Microsoft has offered buyouts to employees, underscoring a broad industry shift.
As AI continues to integrate deeper into business operations, the question of its long-term impact on employment remains a critical concern for both companies and employees alike. Oracle's recent moves serve as a stark reminder of the evolving landscape in the technology world.
