Air India is setting its sights on a significant turnaround, with incoming CEO Tewolde Gebremariam pledging to "make Air India great again." This ambitious declaration came during a recent town hall meeting in New Delhi, where Tata Sons and Air India chairman N Chandrasekaran outlined a clear vision for the national carrier's future.
Chandrasekaran emphasized a multi-pronged approach, instructing the new leadership to
Focus on safety, financial stability, winning trust of passengers and offer a consistent customer experience.
He acknowledged the formidable challenges faced by the airline in the past 18 months, including geopolitical disruptions, airspace closures, fuel volatility, and a tragic Ahmedabad crash, which have all contributed to a turbulent period for Air India.
For Chandrasekaran, bringing Air India back into the Tata Group fold marks "one of the most important milestones of my career." He highlighted the unique position of Air India, stating, "AI belongs to a billion people.... It is probably the only business that a billion people talk about, have views on, criticise fiercely and appreciate at times. ... all these one billion people are rooting for AI.
That is our biggest strength." Chandrasekaran, who has announced he will not seek a fresh term as Tata boss next February, is clearly invested in setting the airline on a path to success.
The "next phase" for Air India will primarily concentrate on four key areas: safety, customer trust, operational execution, and cost discipline. Safety, in particular, is paramount. Chandrasekaran stated, "The most important thing Air India should aspire to have is trust in the minds of people.
AI must be known for caring about safety above everything else.
Our safety record should not just match the best airlines in the world, it should be better than the best."
Addressing Air India's historical financial struggles, which include mounting losses and a bloated cost structure, Chandrasekaran urged employees to foster "a stronger culture of cost consciousness" to achieve financial sustainability. He believes that "Every individual in Air India can contribute to improving cost efficiency." Gebremariam, known for successfully turning around "Eth" (Ethiopian Airlines), brings a wealth of experience to this challenging task.
This new direction signals a determined effort to revitalize Air India, aiming to restore its former glory and secure its place as a leading global airline, trusted by passengers and financially robust.
