A new medical breakthrough is offering fresh hope to those battling advanced bowel cancer. An early-stage clinical trial has revealed that a targeted drug, known as ozekibart, can effectively halt the progression of the disease in a significant majority of patients. When combined with traditional chemotherapy, this innovative treatment has shown remarkable results for people who previously had very few options left.
The trial, led by the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust in London, involved 45 participants whose cancer had continued to spread despite multiple previous treatments. The results were stunning: tumor growth stopped in 87% of the patients—nearly nine out of ten people. Even more encouraging, 20% of participants saw their tumors actually shrink, and in one exceptional case, follow-up scans showed no visible tumor at all.
What makes ozekibart special is how it works. It mimics a natural protein that binds specifically to receptors on cancer cells, essentially "telling" them to die. Because it is highly targeted, it largely spares healthy tissue, which is a major advantage over more aggressive treatments that can cause widespread damage to the body.
For patients like 59-year-old Amanda Burgess, this trial has been life-changing. Diagnosed in 2024 and told her cancer had spread, she joined the study in 2025. She describes the therapy as giving her a "new lease of life," highlighting the real-world impact these scientific advancements have on individuals and their families.
While this was a Phase I trial—meaning it’s still in the early stages of testing—the medical community is buzzing with optimism. Dr. Hazel Lote, a consultant medical oncologist, noted that these results are particularly promising for patients with advanced colorectal cancer who are often out of surgical or standard treatment options. As research continues, there is hope that this combination therapy could soon become a standard weapon in the fight against cancer.
