K'taka CM Siddaramaiah, DK Shivakumar to meet Congress in Delhi
Karnataka's leadership rift may edge toward resolution as Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar plan talks with top Congress leaders in Delhi, after a rally at Ramlila Maidan.
In New Delhi, Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah and deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar are preparing for a high-stakes encounter with Congress brass on December 14 to resolve the ongoing leadership tensions in the state.
The two leaders could meet top figures such as Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi or Mallikarjun Kharge, a sign that the party might seek a long-term solution to the simmering clash over who should lead Karnataka. Although the window for such discussions is narrow, party insiders describe the potential Delhi meeting as a significant step toward restoring normalcy in the state.
The talks are expected to follow the party’s meg a rally at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi, which doubles as a platform for the Vote Chor Gaddi Chhod campaign alleging collusion between the ruling BJP and the Election Commission. The campaign has framed the Karnataka crisis as part of broader national political dynamics and has set the tone for forthcoming discussions with the party leadership.
Karnataka in-charge Randeep Surjewala stressed that Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar are senior leaders who can meet any top party leaders, should the need arise. He also noted that if a meeting with Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi or Kharge takes place, it would indicate the party brass’s commitment to resolving the issue. While the party has indicated that the leadership crisis could be fixed by top leaders, wrangling persists in Belagavi, where the state assembly’s winter session is underway.
The dispute traces back to 2023 when the Congress wrested power in Karnataka, intensifying after the government crossed its halfway mark on November 20. Analysts say the focus on a generational handover has added another layer to the internal debate, making a conclusive resolution particularly timely as the party weighs its leadership lineup ahead of elections.
