Meta builds Zuckerberg AI clone to help staff feel connected
Meta is developing an AI version of Mark Zuckerberg to help employees feel more connected to the founder amid a pivot away from grand metaverse aims.
Meta is actively developing an AI clone of Mark Zuckerberg designed to mirror his mannerisms, tone, and strategic thinking to foster a stronger sense of connection between staff and the company’s leader. The project, run by Meta’s Superintelligence Labs, is in an early stage and envisions real-time conversations that could make employees feel closer to the founder through direct interactions with the AI. The clone is distinct from the separately reported CEO agent project that aims to assist Zuckerberg in leadership tasks.
This latest move reflects Zuckerberg’s broader push to place a more hands-on, digital presence at the heart of Meta’s operations as the company scales back its expansive metaverse ambitions. In 2022, Zuckerberg unveiled a virtual avatar inside the metaverse, a project later criticized for its limited emotional expressiveness. The company also experimented with celebrity-based AI personas—modeled on Snoop Dogg, Tom Brady, and Kendall Jenner—but those efforts were discontinued in 2024 after limited traction.
Even after investing tens of billions of dollars, Meta signaled a retreat from the original metaverse vision, shifting focus toward practical AI tools that creators and users can employ today. The Zuckerberg clone appears to be part of a broader strategy to make digital representations of leadership more accessible and to give employees new ways to engage with the company’s evolving AI ecosystem. In 2024, Meta demonstrated a live AI creator persona concept, and the platform later allowed creators to craft AI versions of themselves to interact with followers, though access was restricted for teenagers in January. The continued exploration of AI avatars underscores Meta’s ongoing commitment to integrating artificial intelligence into everyday work and product experiences.
