Four South African cheetahs reach Bengaluru, headed to Bannerghatta Park

Four cheetahs from South Africa arrived at Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru, late Friday night, and are set to be housed at Bannerghatta National Park on the city’s outskirts, with public viewing planned soon. They will be quarantined for 30 days, checked for infections, and closely watched as they acclimatise to their new environment before moving to the national park. This move marks Karnataka’s cheetah reintroduction after 70 years and signals a significant step in biodiversity restoration in the region. Before transport, the four animals underwent thorough health inspections to ensure they were fit for travel, with authorities emphasizing strict health surveillance throughout the acclimatisation period. Once cleared, the cheetahs will join Bannerghatta National Park’s wildlife facilities, where visitors will eventually be able to observe them under controlled conditions, contributing to conservation education and ecotourism goals.
