Death Cab for Cutie Drops Punching the Flowers, New Single From I Built You a Tower
Death Cab for Cutie unveils the second single 'Punching the Flowers' from I Built You a Tower, with a new video and a summer North American tour.
Death Cab for Cutie have released a new single, “Punching the Flowers,” the second track from their forthcoming album I Built You a Tower. The band also released a video for the song, directed by Jason Lester. The album is due on June 5th via ANTI- Records, and the release follows the earlier unveiling of “Riptides.”
“Punching the Flowers” is a song about stagnation and the feeling of being imprisoned by The Known. And about the damage done when someone ventures deeper into the unknown, guitarist and frontman Benjamin Gibbard said in a statement. The lyric narrative uses the image of a toddler’s tantrum and a flurry of petals as a metaphor for longing and frustration with beauty that's hard to possess.
The accompanying video, directed by filmmaker Jason Lester, visually amplifies the track’s themes with stark imagery and rapid cuts that echo the tension in the lyrics. Fans who have followed the band’s evolution will hear a return to some of the energy that first drew them to Death Cab, even as the approach feels newly weathered and reflective.
In a summer push for the new record, Death Cab for Cutie have announced a tour that will bring the music to major venues across North America, including stops in Los Angeles, Toronto, and Philadelphia among others. The outing marks the band’s first album cycle in four years and follows the band’s reinvigorated studio sessions that bassist Nick Harmer described as a return to the earliest, more fearless versions of the group. Tickets are on sale for the tour, with additional dates and markets to be announced as the summer progresses.
