Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi filed his nomination papers from the Jorhat Assembly seat on Monday, marking his debut electoral bid in the state polls. The deputy Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha kicked off his campaign by visiting religious sites across communities before leading a rally from Jorhat stadium that lasted about three hours and wrapped up at the district commissioner's office, drawing a large crowd along the way.
Gogoi also paid a stop at his family home in the Nazir Ali area and offered prayers before the portrait of his father, Tarun Gogoi, the former Chief Minister. The campaign stop underscored an emphasis on inclusivity and local resonance as he pits himself against veteran BJP politician Hitendranath Goswami, who has represented the seat five terms (three with the AGP and twice since 2016 with the BJP).
Friday's filing in the 126-member Assembly comes ahead of a tight timetable: the last date for filing papers was March 23, 2026, with documents to be scrutinised on March 24 and withdrawal candidates deadline on March 26. Elections to the assembly are scheduled for April 9, with vote counting on May 4.
