West Bengal Schools Begin Mornings With Rabindranath Tagore's State Song
West Bengal directs government and aided schools to start each day with Banglar Mati, Banglar Jol, along with the national anthem, prompting mixed reactions ahead of state elections.
West Bengal has mandated that all government and government-aided schools begin their day with Rabindranath Tagore’s Banglar Mati, Banglar Jol, as the state song during morning assemblies. The directive, issued by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education late on Thursday, follows a directive from the Chief Minister’s office. Education Minister Bratya Basu said that, in line with the chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s instruction, government-run and government-aided schools would sing Tagore’s state song along with Jana Gana Mana Adhinayaka Jaya Hey, the national anthem, as a daily ritual to promote unity in the state.
