JNU protesters granted bail as calls for VC resignation grow
Fourteen JNU students are out on bail after protests at the Delhi campus, with demands including the Vice Chancellor's resignation over casteist comments.
Fourteen Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students, including three office bearers of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU), were granted bail on Friday morning after a protest that had seen them attempt to march toward the Ministry of Education but be halted at the JNU gate. They will be released after verification of their permanent addresses. In a statement, the JNUSU said, “Since all of the students are originally not from Delhi, the process of verification itself becomes a process of elongating imprisonment. Many of the students have suffered serious injuries along with deteriorating health conditions. Moreover, the upcoming days come filled with court holidays as well.” The union added that the students plan to appeal for a modification in the bail conditions on Saturday, February 28.
The protests on February 26–27 were fueled by a broader demand for accountability at JNU, including the resignation of the Vice Chancellor over casteist comments she allegedly made during a podcast interview earlier. The bail outcome comes as campus activists vow to keep pressing for their demands while navigating the legal process and ongoing court schedules.
