Samantha Bryan, the only child of Soham murderer Ian Huntley, said she was “over the moon” to learn of his death and added: “I felt relieved. I didn’t cry. I smiled. I was over the mood to be honest.” She also stated that his ashes should be flushed down the toilet. Huntley died in hospital on Saturday after being attacked in the workshop of a maximum security prison by an inmate at HMP Frankland, Durham, on 26 February. He was 52 and had been jailed for life with a minimum 40-year tariff for the murder of two girls in Soham in 2002. Samantha, 27, is Huntley’s only child. Her mother, Katie Bryan, had been in a relationship with Huntley when she was 15 and became pregnant at 16, later ending the relationship. Samantha said she learned she was his daughter at 14 while researching a school crime project and has spent years grappling with the impact of the case. She told The Sun that, despite the revelation, Huntley is “nothing to me apart from biology.” Over the years she has cried for Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, the victims, and she insisted she does not want them forgotten. The family’s complex history—tied to the victims’ memories and the broader national shock—continues to be a touchstone in discussions surrounding the case.
